Employment Slowing Down - Few IT Job Added

Net gain of 4,900 seasonally adjusted IT jobs in March – Unadjusted data shows a loss of 1,200 IT jobs

Employment Slowing Down - Few IT Job Added - eJobDescription.com and Janco has found that the recovery continues to be anemic and is not strong enough to drive companies to increase IT head counts.    In addition there continues to be some pessimism as major companies continue to lay-off staff like JC Penny which announced that they are cutting 13% of their HQ staff - including some IT positions.   BLS data shows that there was only a slight increase in the number of IT jobs in March when looking at the seasonally adjusted numbers. In California the overall unemployment number is 10.9% and is a drag on the entire economy.

On the bright side, Janco has found that short term hiring for IT staff and consultants is up, however long term many of the CIOs interviewed by Janco do not feel that overall  hiring will improve significantly until early in 2013.  The CEO of Janco, Mr. Victor Janulaitis said, “In telephone interviews in late March of 101 US based CIOs we found that most have a number of them have short term needs that need to be filled for additional staffing of a ‘temporary’ nature. CIOs are striving to keep the overall FTE (full time equivalent) headcounts level and do not project an increase within the next several months.”   In addition he added, “There are some CIOs that are bullish, however for the most part CIOs continues to remain cautious.”

He added, “One in five CIO’s are looking to hire lower level staff within the next 3 months to fill short term needs. Many are looking for contractors and consultants with particular sets of skills to meet the demands of mobile computing.  In addition some of these same CIO are looking towards implementation process to allow users to use their own personal devices – BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) – to minimize capital expenditures and improve ROI.”
