Telecommuting is a popular alternative to making the drive in to work every day. If your users are asking about telecommuting to work, you may find that a telecommuting policy helps makes things clear to them.
General rules need to be applied if telecommuting is allowed:
- Identify he duties that will be performed away from the office;
- Identify how deadlines will be handled;
- Identify the hours to be worked;
- Identify how hours worked will be recorded;
- Identify if overtime is to be handled any differently than in the office, how it will be handled;
- Identify the amount of notice to be given of any change in the arrangement;
- Identify how much time the employee should spend in the office and when the employee should report back to the office;
- Identify how the employee and the organization will be able to contact each other during the workday;
- Identify any changes in workplace policies that may be necessary due to the telecommuting arrangement; and
- Confirm the employee's understanding and agreement that the telecommuting arrangement is at the will of the organization and may be altered or terminated at any time.
