Harder to Terminate Employees if New Legislation Passes

IT Job DescriptionsWith all of the layoffs and plant closings there are some in congress who what to make it more difficult for employers to terminate and/or layoff non-performing and excess staff.  If that does happen, the termination process will become even more of a legal quagmire.  There are a series of staffing questions your enterprise needs to answer before it is too late.  The questions are easy - it is not clear that the processes necessary to implement a strategy to address them are.  Janco proposes that these are the critical questions that need to be address.

  • Are job responsibilities documented in detail job descriptions?
  • How does each job support the key objectives and mission of the enterprise?
  • When looking for individuals to fill roles are internal candidates looked for first? Why or why not?
  • Are specific job performance criteria defined for each job?
  • Is the compensation for jobs within the enterprise competitive? If not why?
  • When recruiting for new employees and/or promoting existing employees are the selection and evaluation process robustly defined?
  • When interviewing potential employees does the enterprise have guidelines established that key in on the suitability of the candidate for the job being filled?
  • Are all potential employees thoroughly vetted?
  • Are all employees afforded equal opportunities to be trained to meet specific job requirements?

All of these questions are the basis for creating HR strategy which can insulate an enterprise from risk and costs associated with terminations that go  wrong.

Internal Staff Account for Over One Third of All Data Losses

Security Policies Procedures

Over one-third of data loss incidents are caused by human error. A human flipped the wrong switch, bumped into or spilled something, tripped over a power cord, dislodged or miss-routed an equipment cable, touched a sensitive component while carrying a static charge - or otherwise misused the equipment. And that's just the accidental incidents. What about intentional misuse of equipment - and theft? Today's high-dollar servers are so compact that they could be removed from the building in a briefcase. When you consider the magnitude of the IT investment, and the value of the data and applications that ride on it, you can appreciate the critical importance of protecting it from unauthorized access.

Diversified access-control policies and procedures enable you to manage access at the level of function and/or individual.
