Setting a Strategy for Success in a Job |
|
Success
in job or with a new organization is often defined by
the strategy you set for success. A process that we
have found that works is simple and helps CIOs as well
as project managers succeed is as follows:
-
Assess the environment to understand the current
state of affairs
- enterprise want employees and managers to bring
something to the table. If the department is running
smoothly, they want want a leader to help move the
organization forward. If something is not working,
they want the someone who can fix it.
-
Define what is expected of you and what success is
3, 6, and 12 months out
- How management define success for the position. To
do this the managers need to know what management's
expectations are. Ask the right questions and
listen to the answers.
-
Learn the politics of the situation
- Managers need to get to know their peers,
supervisors and who the power centers they are
interacting with. Managers need to identify the
individuals who directly and indirectly affect their
ability to get the job done - it may be an
individual completely out of the manager's
organizational structure.
-
Learn how people interact and how things get done
- One of the trickiest tasks of any job is figuring
out the culture and office politics so you don't
step on toes or run afoul of your colleagues.
-
Get something good done quickly
- the enterprise will judge every manager every day,
so the successful manager needs to have credibility.
One way to do that is to look for a success and
communicate it .
